Petersen Automotive Museum; A Case Study in Virtual Construciton

MATT Construction, the builders of Los Angeles’ most iconic building from The Broad to The Getty Villa came to me asking for a book to be designed detailing their unique construction methods for perhaps their MOST iconic building:  The Petersen Automotive Museum.   With it’s sweeping organic exoskeleton, the Petersen instantly became one of the top buildings in LA (and in IG).  However the building process was far from straightforward and a testament to their construction methods.  The building and planning methods are almost as futuristic as the building itself.

The organic “fingerprint” texture of the exoskeleton became a graphic element woven through the otherwise blocky layout, symbolizing the dichotomy between the two  aspects of the building itself.
